When the Caledonian Brewery was established in 1869, Edinburgh was regarded as one of the great brewing cities of Europe. At that time more than forty breweries existed in the city, using the purest ingredients and producing world-renowned beers of exceptional quality.

Now, more than 130 years on, the Caledonian Brewery is one of only two surviving breweries in the city - and this is mainly due to its strong commitment to the brewing traditions, skills and heritage of yesteryears.

Only premium quality 'Golden Promise' barley, grown locally in East Lothian, is used. This type of barley has just the right proportion of starch and low levels of nitrogen making it ideal for brewing - inferior quality barley would give the beer a cloudy appearance.
